Why Argentina?
It started with someone else’s dream fishing trip.
In the fall of 2025, we pulled one name out of more than 8,000 entries and told a complete stranger to choose anywhere in the world he wanted to fish. Noah could not decide. He kept circling back to two answers: the famed trout rivers of Patagonia, or a shot at a golden dorado.
That search eventually led us to the crew at Set, who opened the door to two completely different sides of Argentina: a world-class trout program in Patagonia and a golden dorado program a thousand miles northeast in the wetlands of Corrientes Province. So we planned both trips, told Noah about the first, and kept the second a secret until the final night of week one.
Sixteen days later, we came home with stories from two wildly different fisheries in one incredible country, and we couldn’t wait to share the adventure with the Wild Fly community.

Iberá: everything you know about fishing, turned up
Corrientes felt like another Argentina. A short flight northeast carried us out of the Patagonian foothills and into the subtropics, where the Iberá Wetlands stretch so far that lagoons, narrow channels, flooded marsh, and timber begin to feel like one inland sea. We ran skiffs through a maze of capybara, caiman, and breathtaking birdlife, casting gurglers and streamers to golden dorado capable of turning a glassy sunset into sheer chaos in a heartbeat.
Corrientes already felt endless, and the Ysoró Wetlands opened another world within it. Iberá’s intimate channels gave way to winding creeks laced with giant lily pads, each bend hiding another stretch of water.

What stayed with us in Corrientes was how alive the entire place felt. The boats moved early, the heat built fast, and every channel carried the possibility of something ferocious erupting from the water. The guides read the marsh in real time, finding movement and structure in water that looked unreadable to us. We also fished alongside biologists tagging dorado for ongoing research and saw how closely the fishing is tied to stewardship. This is a wild fishery, but not an unmanaged one. The people putting us on fish are also helping protect what makes the experience possible.
What we actually found
We set out to give Noah his dream fishing experience. By the time we came home, the trip no longer belonged to Noah alone. It had become a memory all of us would carry for the rest of our lives, forged together across two worlds that hardly seemed capable of existing in the same country. The contrast made Argentina feel impossibly vast. The people who welcomed us into both made it feel connected.

Patagonia: water that keeps getting wilder
Rakin Lodge sits above the Rio Codihue on Estancia El Halcon, with more than 14 miles of world-class trout water winding through the ranch below. We could reach more water in minutes than we could possibly fish in a week, but the landscape kept pulling us farther out. We waded a canyon beneath cliffs where pumas still roam, sight-fished a clear spring creek, and worked dry-dropper rigs along weed lines and lagoons in the foothills of the Andes. Even back on the Codihue, grazing cattle and caracaras circling overhead made familiar water feel wild.
By the time we left for the Rio Trocoman, it felt like the week had been preparing us for something bigger. We crossed a pass at nearly 8,000 feet before sunrise and followed the road until the trucks could go no farther. From there, horses carried our gear while we fished and hiked three miles into a backcountry camp. The next morning, the river became our road, carrying us 11 miles through a remote canyon and across some of the most incredible trout water we had ever seen.
