Week two of Noah’s dream trip—revealed on the last night of week one. Patagonia to the subtropics in a single travel day: cold mornings give way to eighty degrees, lily pads, and a fish that eats like it is angry about it.
WHY GOLDEN DORADO?
Some fish eat. Others attack.
Golden dorado were built to hunt. Their speed, power, hard mouths and explosive takes create a style of fly fishing that feels completely removed from trout fishing. Everything can change in an instant: a flash of gold, a violent strike, and a fish in the air before you have fully processed the eat.
For Wild Fly, that contrast was part of what made week two in Argentina feel like entering another world. We went from cold Patagonia mornings and dry flies to subtropical heat, big flies, skiffs and one of freshwater's most aggressive predators.

Set's Golden Dorado Program brings together three distinct environments across Corrientes: the Ysoró Wetlands, Iberá Wetlands, and Upper Paraná River. Over a typical week, anglers fish two of those three environments, creating one cohesive trip with two distinctly different fisheries.
Ysoró Wetlands / Jetu'u: dynamic channels, lagoons and flooded marshes with abundant forage and aggressive dorado.
Iberá Wetlands / La Alondra'i: pristine wilderness, clear water, wildlife and access deeper into the marsh.

HUNTING A PREDATOR
You fish these waters from sixteen- to seventeen-foot skiffs, poled quietly along grass edges and giant lily pads with one angler up front. Most days are spent drifting, searching and casting large flies in anticipation of a heart-stopping thump. When a dorado commits, it is an ineffable display of brute force and bad intentions.
THE WILDLIFE AROUND YOU
Capybara, caimans, marsh deer and birds of all sorts line the banks. As the sun sinks, a new chorus of insects and amphibians emerges during the prime bite window. It is an otherworldly experience to fish around this much biodiversity.
THE FISHING
THE MAIN TARGET: GOLDEN DORADO
Golden dorado are apex predators with bone-hard mouths. They pull with brute force, jump like tarpon and can throw your hook in a heartbeat. They share these waters with pacu, pirapita and palometa, so the days stay lively even between dorado eats.
HOW YOU FISH
Floating and intermediate lines, big flies and short accurate casts to structure. Gurglers, poppers and divers on top when the fish are willing; streamers when they are not. The whole game is presentation, retrieve and a strip set that has nothing to do with trout fishing.
AN AVERAGE DAY
Long stretches of looking and casting punctuated by a few seconds of chaos. Every fish feels earned and a true trophy.
The lodging follows the fishing.
Each fishery has its own comfortable Set lodge, allowing the week to be built around water rather than one fixed base. Each lodge hosts a maximum of ten guests across six rooms, with air conditioning, comfortable beds, cold drinks, and home-cooked meals. La Alondra’i can also reach remote camps deeper in Iberá; Jetu’u and Itatí are lodge-based.
The rhythm is subtropical: breakfast and out around sunrise, back for a real lunch and siesta through the heat, then out again for the evening bite. Guides make bigger flies, retrieves, and strip sets approachable while navigating a maze that never looks the same twice.
A TYPICAL WEEK
Iberá to Ysoró. Set combines two of three fisheries. This is the pairing Wild Fly experienced—not the only possible version of the trip.
DAY 1 — ARRIVE
Fly Buenos Aires to Corrientes, transfer to La Alondra’i, rig 8-weights, and learn what a strip set means.
DAYS 2–4 — IBERÁ WETLANDS
Skiffs into clear water, grass edges, and lily pads. One angler on the bow; evening sessions for the surface bite.
DAY 5 — MOVE TO JETU’U
Transfer to the base for both the Ysoró Wetlands and Middle Paraná.
DAYS 6–7 — MARSH + PARANÁ
Fish streamers and surface flies tight to structure, balancing wetland action with the river’s larger-fish potential.
DAY 8 — DEPART
Transfer to Corrientes for the flight to Buenos Aires.
EACH DAY — ADAPT
Guides adjust water and timing to heat, weather, fish movement, and your priorities. Lunch, cold drinks, and a siesta reset the day before the evening bite window.

Lodging, guided fishing, meals at the program, and listed in-country transfers are typically packaged together. International airfare, Buenos Aires hotels, gratuities, insurance, and personal purchases are generally separate. Set will itemize the exact proposal.
Golden dorado conditions shift with heat, rain, river levels, and fish movement. Set uses your preferred timing and priorities to recommend the strongest two-fishery pairing.
Trips generally connect through Buenos Aires to Corrientes, followed by ground transfers to the first lodge. Set coordinates the in-country sequence between fisheries and confirms the full transfer plan.
Plan around 8-weight rods, appropriate floating and intermediate lines, strong leaders, large flies, sun protection, light rainwear, and clothing for heat and humidity. Ask about loaner tackle before traveling.
Most fishing is from a boat, so the main demand is standing, repeated casting, sun, and accuracy rather than hiking. The strip set is learnable; the guides coach it, but losing fish remains part of the experience.
Expect subtropical warmth, humidity, insects, strong sun, and possible thunderstorms. Early and late fishing with a midday break is part of the program’s natural rhythm.

Dynamic wetland action. Channels, lagoons, flooded marsh, and abundant forage create frequent opportunities at aggressive fish of varied sizes. Jetu’u also reaches the Middle Paraná for larger structure and open water.
IBERÁ · LA ALONDRA’I
Pristine wilderness immersion. Clear water, poling skiffs, topwater, and one angler on the bow. Wildlife and optional remote camps deeper in the marsh make this the most immersive wilderness expression.
UPPER PARANÁ · ITATÍ
Trophy-focused big water. Rocky water below the dams, resident fish capable of exceeding thirty pounds, and slower presentations—including swung big flies—for anglers chasing the top of the food chain.

CONSERVATION & RESEARCH
On our first morning in the wetlands, we watched biologists working with the Golden Dorado Conservation Coalition catch a dorado, surgically implant a transmitter, and release it. Set has spent years supporting this work alongside Argentine universities and an international team of scientists. Tagging efforts have allowed researchers to monitor fish that travel hundreds of miles — sometimes more than a thousand — through the Paraná system.
These efforts have legally codified the golden dorado’s protected status as a provincial treasure in Corrientes. Thanks to the work of the Coalition and its partners, commercial sale of dorado is now illegal, although bycatch mortality and dams still pose significant threats. All of Set’s guides are trained to administer tags and contribute to this ongoing research, giving every angler the chance to support the preservation of this culturally iconic species.
